Ibaraki 1990.6_web

According to the museum this preparatory sketch of the demon Ibaraki was made as part of a commission for a Shinto shrine tablet. The Japanese artist Shibata Zeshin (1807 - 1891) used ink on paper, and the work is dated c. 1840. Overall dimensions are 84 1/2 x 76 15/16 in. and the painting alone measures 63 3/8 x 67 13/16 in. The powerful brushwork evokes a dynamic image of the demon Ibaraki. This work was acquired through the Mr. & Mrs. William H. Marlatt Fund. The work is currently not on view.
