Seated Buddha 1967.39_web

This stucco Buddha is dated circa 300 and from Afghanistan, Gandhara, Hadda. The figure measures 14 1/2 in. The draped robe completely covers his feet and the hands are shown in the dhyani gesture of meditation. The museum states there were Buddha figures in the niches of the ruins at Hadda. An alternate view available at the museum website indicates it was originally attached to a supporting structure. The museum website also includes a photo of the two attendants that complete this set. It can be seen in Gallery 242A and was acquired as part of the Edward L. Whittemore Fund. It is in the public domain. Reference No. 1967.39
