Nursing Woman with Child 1961.198_web

The Senufo-style carved wooden mother figure is from West Africa’s Cote de Ivoire (Ivory Coast) and is dated during 1800’s to 1900’s. Although 63.6 cm (25 1/16 in.) in height, the striking elongation of her head with the chin jutting outward, and the outward extension of the right breast expand the size and force of this image. The darker coloration of the wood along the lower back torso and including the infant’s head enhances this effect. The sculpture was purchased by the Cleveland Museum of Art from the James Albert and Mary Gardiner Memorial Fund. Currently it is on display in Gallery 235 and is in the public domain, Reference No. 1961.198
