And Then Turn Left Onto Deansgate...

The sound of punk rock may have been shaking up the nation in 1977 but in Manchester’s famous Albert Square life carried on much the same as always.

Far from the filth and the fury, a constable of Greater Manchester Police kneels at the roadside and gives directions to a motorist while his colleague look on.

Ironically, the image was taken just yards from the site of the famous gig by the punk pioneers The Sex Pistols at the Lesser Free Trade Hall just a year earlier.

Manchester Town Hall can bee seen in the background and in those days traffic flowed past the buildings front door.

This image is taken from a series used for recruitment purposes at the time.
