Saline Ettore e Infersa - Marsala - Sicilia - Sicily
The Saline Ettore e Infersa are located in the Stagnone lagoon, facing the island of Mothia along the route "The Salt Road" between Trapani and Marsala.
They are still active, and make use of traditional techniques of manufacture of salt. Along the perimeter levees are raised, regularly spaced, white mounds of salt that during winter season are covered with tiles to protect them from rain.
In the Salina there are three wind-mills restored and operational. Of particular interest is the central mill. It is one of the oldest, with a star-shaped structure and wooden gears and blades. On the characteristic conical dome of the mill are fixed six trapezoidal blades. The structure is revolving and is guided by an operator (mulinaro) in the wind direction so as to start the movement to convert wind power into mechanical energy. This power was used not only for grinding but also and especially for moving large spiral screws, or Archimedes screws, which allow the lifting and the slow path of seawater in the tanks salting.
