I am so glad for the opportunity to partner with 500px Studio and UN Women to create a photo series for the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, part of the United Nations Secretary-General's UNiTE to End Violence against Women Campaign. For 16 days (November 25 - December 10), with 16 photographers, we are coloring the world orange in an effort to raise awareness.
This first photograph, “1 in 3,” references the statistics that 1 in 3 women and girls worldwide will experience gender-based violence in their lifetime. That is a huge number of people, and with those kind of numbers it is almost certain that we all know a woman who is going through abuse. This issue is so widespread but often not discussed or brought to light. The more we acknowledge that this violence is a real, prevalent problem - both physical or emotional/psychological - and try to help, the more we empower women and begin to make a difference.
See my whole photo essay (and article) here. I will be posting the rest of the photos each day this week!
