Nave, Stiftskirche, Kleve
The nave of the Collegiate and Provostal Church (Stifts- und Propstkirche) in the Lower Rhine county town of Kleve, dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary - generally rendered into English by the local tourist authorities as the Minster. There has been a church on the site since 1170. The current building was begun in 1341, consecrated in 1354, with the nave complete by 1394 and the double tower completed in 1426. The church was almost completely destroyed in the bombing of Kleve in October 1944. The nave was rebuilt by 1956 with the towers following by 1969. Although always the main parish church of the city, a result of the decline in priests and church attendance, it is now part of a much larger parish covering most of the churches in the city and western suburbs.
