Hulks

One of the most depressing locations I've ever shot at. I took a chance after seeing these old barges near Rainham Marshes (the original idea), and drove down there.

They're abandoned in the industrial heart of the Thames Estuary. The mud is like glue and the rice factory nearby makes the whole place reek. The worst bit though, is that the entire area above the high water mark is carpeted with waste plastic. It's horrible to see, completely choking up the reedbeds. We've been given a beautiful world, and look what we do to it.

I found it difficult to make pictures there, apart from the mud (which gets everywhere), the stink, and the general gloomy vibe of the place, it was really challenging to get an angle on these boats.

According to some accounts, they were towed over the English Channel on D-Day, and used to make mulberries. Or they weren't at all. They're made of concrete because steel was in short supply in WWII.
