A Whale of a Tail
"I've got a whale of a tale to tell you lads, a whale of a tale or twoooooo..." OK, enough Kirk Douglas impersonations. The next few shots were taken on my photo excursion in Juneau.
While I got some great shots, none were really out of this world spectacular. There's one very good reason for that, though. I've never been afraid of using manual focus lenses before, but my feet have always been on dry land and the bigger lenses were always on a tri/monopod. Trying to focus a big, fast lens on whales surfacing for a few seconds while handholding it in a bouncing little rubber boat is next to impossible, I've decided. If I ever go back to Alaska and engage in whale photography in a small boat, you can be assured that I'm taking autofocus glass with me!
