The Last - Ol Pejeta Conservancy

The Last - Ol Pejeta Conservancy

This is Sudan, the last male northern white rhino in the world. We had the opportunity to meet Sudan and touch him. It was a bittersweet moment. On the one hand, it was amazing to be right next to such an amazing animal. At the same time, though, it's impossible not to contemplate the fate of this subspecies.

There are two female northern white rhinos alive, too. Both are also kept at Ol Pejeta. Sudan is advanced in years, though and natural breeding is not an option. There are plans for IVF programs, but we still have to face the reality that this subspecies is at the doorstep of extinction because of human activities like poaching and habitat loss. Even today, Sudan needs to be guarded 24/7 because of the threat of poachers.

I've gone harsher with the tones than I normally do in my B&W conversions because I feel it suits the harsh nature of the subject matter.
