It's still raining

So ... out of desperation we turn our attention to indoor diversions. For instance, the latest issue of "Southern Family" magazine. One of those periodicals that's so bad, it's actually good in an oddball way. And, it's FREE!

It's slick, and the color printing is gorgeous. Well, sort of. And then there's the prose. For instance, the opening lines of the lead article, here transcribed verbatim:

"Nestled among gently rolling hills, where stately trees gracefully shade the landscaped vista's as far as the eye can see, is one of the best kept secrets in Alabama -- the magnificent Canebrake Club.

"Canebrake Club is a serene enclave where you can leave your busy schedule at the gate and relax as you drive down the winding streets, catching a glimpse of the emerald green 240-acre golf course as you make your way home."

Again, that's verbatim, right down to the apostrophe in "vista's".

Somehow, I'm reminded of the late great literary master from South Carolina, J. Gordon Coogler, and his oft-quoted couplet:

"Alas! for the South, her books have grown fewer—

She never was much given to literature."
