ewer with dancing females within arcades

Gilded silver

Iran

Sasanian period, 6th-7th century A.D.

The dancing females on this ewer are derived from Graeco-Roman imagery. They personify the seasonal festivals that occurred during the Zoroastrian calendar year in Sasanian Iran. This vessel was likely used at court banquets.
