marble portrait bust of a young woman

Marble

Roman, Severan period

ca. A.D. 193-211

In the early third century A.D., many marble busts became so deep as to nearly be half-statues, often including the arms. This young woman has a hair arrangement made popular by Julia Domna, wife of emperor Septimius Severus and mother of emperor Caracalla. Parted at the center, long locks framed the face, covering the ears and looping back to form an enormous bun.
