Dr. David R. Maidment: Geospatial Scientist of the Year 2014

A researcher, academic and a visionary mentor is Dr. David R. Maidment, Hussein M. Alharthy Centennial Chair in Civil Engineering, at University of Texas, Austin, USA. As a specialist in surface water hydrology, and in particular in the application of geographic information systems to hydrology,

Dr. Maidment has successfully implemented vast number of projects of national as well as international significance. The large number of frequently cited scientific papers and technical books he has published and edited has made a significant impact in the field of hydrological sciences and flood monitoring and also given impetus towards the concrete usage of GIS for natural resources management.

Dr. Maidment has worked tirelessly and successfully in recent years to bring together the international hydrologic technology and policy community to work within the Open Geospatial Consortium to drive consensus on geospatial and information technology standards that make it easy to access, share, integrate and derive maximum value from the myriad of disparate water data observation stations located around the world. The importance of this contribution in drought and flood disaster prevention, agriculture, economic development, public health, hydrologic and environmental science, climate modeling and water resource conflict avoidance and resolution cannot be overstated.

Dr. Maidment has been Chairman of five NRC Committees of the US Government, most significant of which are the Committee on Mapping Science and on FEMA Flood Maps, where through his leadership and guidance, significant changes and developments have been implemented, specifically through the extensive usage of GIScience . Through his appointment and membership on alarge number of decision making bodies in the government and industry, has made and continues to make valuable contributions towards the development of geospatial sciences.
