and the beginning of Russia. This is the Border, not very busy I have to say but it's still a difficult journey to the nearest Russian town of any size, Murmansk . There is still some of the flavour of the Cold War in this area with guard dogs and barbed wire fences and stark functional buildings but the gates are all open. The history of the region from the Second World War is just dreadful. As the Germans retreated and the Russians advanced the place was largely destroyed and became 'Scorched Earth'. They were hoping with a new road due to open in 2017 and improving relations this may become a more significant place for trade - but that was before the Ukraine crisis.
