The Shrewsbury Abbey tanks

08 686 has just arrived and has been coupled to a raft of oil tanks at the Shrewsbury Abbey Oil terminal, this short line ran from Sutton Bridge Junction to Shrewsbury Abbey. The line was originally the terminus of the Shropshire and Montgomeryshire line to Llanymynech Junction on the line from Oswestry to Welshpool and closed 06/11/1933 to passengers. In the yard is a fine crane made in the Abbey Works Shrewsbury, it has a wheeled balance box which is ajustable for different weights on the jib loading. Glimpsed just above the large crane wheel are the floodlights on Gay Meadow, the home of Shrewsbury Town football club for many years. 26/02/1985
