Halifax street signage

Halifax street signage.

Shot handheld with a Sony NEX7 and the SEL1855 kit zoom. Higher ISO, shot through cab window glass.

The kit zoom is not often discussed as a lens; it is neither fast nor wide ranging, but at f5.6 it is reasonably sharp across all focal lengths.

Halifax, Nova Scotia is a small Maritime city in Canada, with a Naval presence, a well established commercial shipping industry and a large University base. Winters are shorter and milder here than in much of Canada, and it sits one timezone east of any in the USA, distant enough from the populations of Ontario & Quebec that it remains less travelled.

This early evening shot in the central bar district captures signage for the old tavern, described as 'the first to open after prohibition' and so the oldest in Halifax -- it moved to a new location shortly after, and so the name lives on but this iconic view is no more.
