Massive Lightning Strike Over the Painted Desert
Captured some sheer amazingness over the Navajo Nation this evening, after climbing nearly 1000ft above the desert floor to the top of SP Crater volcano.
This rare type of super massive lightning is called a “positive” lightning strike, as it originates high up in the cloud formation and strikes the ground with a positive charge, rather than a negative one like most lightning.
Positive lightning makes up less than 5% of all strikes, with a peak charge and potential up to ten times greater than normal negative lighting strikes. Positive lightning carries as much as 300,000 amperes and one billion volts!
