Campsite from Another World
We spent the final night of our Death Valley trip at the Trona Pinnacles. The weather there was...uncooperative.
It clouded over soon after sunset, and I began the unpleasant activity of waking up every hour to see if the sky had cleared. Around 12:30 AM, a few stars appeared, and I set up my cameras to film timelapse. This is a still frame from my Rebel XT's sequence.
Soon after starting the cameras, it completely clouded over again. We woke up at 5 AM and were horrified by rain and heavy winds. Our tent didn't have a rain fly, and we scampered to put it on. My Rebel had blown over in the wind (first time ever...) and was moderately wet, which made for a rather lame end to its timelapse. The 5D Mk. II was on my timelapse rotary table, which had a ton of exposed circuit boards, batteries, and assorted other things that don't play nicely with rain. The electronics had blown from their platform, ripping out some wires and obviously ending the timelapse.
I planned to get up at 5:30 to film the 7 AM sunrise using my railroad dolly. By the time we had collected the cameras from the rain and waterproofed the tent, it was 5:20. Because of the completely clouded-overs skies, I tentatively gave up on the sunrise and went back to bed. I woke up at 6:30 AM, and it was still completely cloudy. At 7:15 AM, when I got up, it was entirely clear. I don't know how sunrise panned out... Someday I'll get to use the railroad dolly at the pinnacles during sunrise.
