Rhyolite Bank Star Trails

During my winter break, I spent 5 days photographing locations along the back roads of Death Valley. We spent a night in Rhyolite, a ghost town just inside Nevada.

Two years ago, I passed a horrible night in the cab of a pickup truck with three other people, taking refuge in Rhyolite from a huge storm. It was too stormy to set up a tent, and we were forced to "sleep" in the truck. This time, however, the weather was entirely clear. It made for good star trail photography, but the daytime photography there was fairly uninteresting.

Because there was frequent traffic in the middle of the night (why do so many people drive into the ghost town, turn around, and immediately leave?!) and camping in the town wasn't permitted, I didn't shoot timelapse here. This image is a stack of 15 6-minute exposures, for a total exposure time of 1.5 hours.

The trip video can be viewed here.
