Yosemite Falls Milky Way
Charles Huang and I did a backpacking trip in Yosemite. We filmed timelapse, camped in unusual places, and slept 12 hours in the course of three nights. I shot 28 GB of photos and used 8 camera batteries over the course of the trip.
We arrived in the Valley in the afternoon of Tuesday, May 15. After picking up wilderness passes and packing our backpacks, we essentially sprinted up the Yosemite Falls trail in order to catch sunset. I had found a spot back in February at which I wanted to film night timelapse, and we arrived at this spot, exhausted, just as the sun set. After shooting the sunset, we set up our tripods, made dinner, and started filming the night's timelapse. This is a still frame from the resulting footage.
After starting the cameras, we hiked another mile or so up the trail to the rim of the valley, where we camped. We got up before dawn in the morning, retrieved the cameras, and hiked back into the valley. We repacked our backpacks and began the ~11-mile hike to Cloud's Rest. Including the Yosemite Falls trail, we covered 13-14 miles and 9000 feet of elevation change in the day.
