Dumbarton Swing Bridge 1
I visited the Dumbarton Swing Bridge about two years ago, but I wasn't entirely happy with my photos. Before I graduated and left Berkeley, I wanted to revisit the location and shoot it once again. This time, there was a bit of a moon to light it.
This time I went out there with Joe Reifer and a friend of his. Reaching the bridge required a 2-mile hike (each way) through the swamp, following abandoned railroad tracks. We encountered a skunk, which partially sprayed us when we went past it...
However, the bridge was well-worth the trip. It's absolutely huge. It connected a railroad across the south bay and was last used in 1982. It could close the tracks for trains to pass, but swing sideways for boats to go by. Now, it sees neither boat nor rail traffic. The house on top of the bridge provided shelter for whoever controlled it.
