Brocken Specter at Laguna de los Tres

I felt like a kid in a candy store during the 5 days I spent hiking in the El Calafate area of Patagonia. Raiatea and I hiked in and set up a basecamp, and then we did dayhikes out from there. Our visit was perfectly timed with the peak of fall colors, and it felt like there were portfolio-quality shots around every corner.

Since Laguna de los Tres is so touristy, shooting sunrise there was at the bottom of our priority list. But our trip had been so productive that we hit every other spot we wanted, and so on our final morning in the area, we hiked up and shot sunrise here. The fog blowing around the lakes with Fitz Roy above them was amazing enough. Just as I emerged into the sun, this glory appeared. I could see my shadow in it, and Wikipedia informs me that this phenomena is called a Brocken spectre. We were again kids in a candy shop.

Fog blew in, the temperature dropped to 24 F (-5 C), and ice started depositing on everything. I would uncap my lens, shoot a few photos, and the recap it to slow the deposition of ice. But after enough minutes, both my lenses iced over, and that put an end to the photography.
