Milky Way over the Green Sand Beach

After six years in Hawaii, I completed my masters and PhD and will be moving away. So, on my last weekend on the Big Island, I was joined by Kurt Lawson and made the trip down the rough 4wd trails to the Papakolea Green Sand Beach in one final attempt to catch the Milky Way over it. It was cloudy all day, and the recent volcanic eruption covered the area in vog, so I was doubtful I would be able to see the stars at all.

The skies cleared right at sunset! The milky way was brilliant over the ocean. An extremely bright Mars trailed the milky way across the sky. There were horribly high winds and tons of blowing sand/gravel, so I was effectively blinded while shooting these photos. We couldn't set up a tent, and ended up sleeping uncomfortably in my car.

Even though I am moving away, I have a huge number of Hawaii photos that I haven't edited/posted yet, so there will be more coming.
