Derelict Pier

This pier was at the base of the cliffs, with no trail down to it. I walked along the cliffs looking for a trail, without success. The beach was tiny, and waves were almost hitting the cliffs.

 

Why was the pier built, and what was it used for? It probably has some really interesting history behind it.
