Titanic Tribute

April 15th marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. last night I was watching the memorial services from Halifax and from the SS Balmoral which was at station over the wreck site of the Titanic. The ceremonies were very moving. It's amazing to think what happened in those cold waters 100 years ago. It really impacted me as well because I had signed up to live feeds over Twitter that recreated the tragedy by sending out tweets describing the major events that were happening at that time 100 years ago. It was moving to read about the vessels that warned Titanic, and how her captain tried to avoid ice by going further south than normal but failed to reduce speed. A horrible even that could have been avoided.

I've been fascinated by the Titanic story since I was in university, many years before the film and the discovery of the wreck. I guess for me working on a degree there was something attractive in reading about another great tragedy! I've never been on a live cruise ship or liner, but I have been on the Queen Mary hotel, which was built only a few years after the Titanic and much like Titanic was built in the media spotlight and carried it's nation's hopes and dreams. So to mark the 100th anniversary of the Titanic, here is a new shot of the Queen Mary from my archives. This is from 2008. While the Titanic rests in a watery bed, here is the Queen Mary basking in the Long Beach sun; not all stories have to end sadly!
