Broch of Gurness, Mainland Orkney
The broch village of Gurness sits overlooking a channel between mainland Orkney and neighboring island Rousay. Built at some time between 500 and 200 BC, this village, which supported about 40 families, was apparently abandoned by 100 BC. The land continued as a farmstead until Norse settlement of the islands in the 8th and 9th centuries.
