Pope John Paul II, Flat Rock, Nfld.

During the 12 days Pope John Paul II spent traveling throughout Canada in 1984, one of the places he visited was Flat Rock, Nfld., a tiny fishing village about a half hour drive from St. John's.

I wanted to photograph the pope from close, therefore I needed a press pass from RCMP. That was relatively easy but to get my own Deputy Minister to sign the application was not that easy. To get near the spot in time I had to get through the security check a night before and slept in my Volkswagen. OK I tried to sleep in the Volkswagen, because the mosquitoes would not let me.

Even with tele-objective I could not get closer picture.
