Sahrivi -- is not only immensely talented, but a very accessible guy, very generous. I have spent hours analyzing his series of fishermen and nets. These photographs touch on something that is hardwired into the human condition -- fishermen, nets, reflections, sillhouettes, the setting sun -- something deeper than logic.

Cracas and I first met over this train car www.flickr.com/photos/cracas/384982657/ and over the years I've grown very fond of his work. He has influenced me more than any other. Here overtures of W. Eugene Smith.

JLCrucif chronicles the stark, but rich lives of these people of the dry mountains and the verdant jungle. He is capable of the most beautiful Flickr shot, but it is the story that unfolds over many photographs that first made me take notice and that has influenced me and has led me to become a friend.
Geoff Quinn says:
I think his composition and use of light is stunning, a cinematic eye that produces powerful work in color and black and white. I cannot tell, but I think many of his portraits are of friends, a sense of community. Some are not and are extraordinary : a woman and child in poverty turning away form the camera. I feel that in many of his shots he has succeeded where I have foundered, my work without constraints: influencing me to be bolder, more intimate. He has a very strong sense of place that I like too -- a series of photos where I migh have one. his portraits capture pleasure and vulnerability. Like most of those in this Gallery, he is one of those rare photographers whose work draws you into their entire stream. And like most he is driven by passion.

Anjan, who influenced me in many ways -- starting with his attention to composition and his beautiful black and white technique -- is remarkable for his humanity, his sense of style and light and his compositions. Here a picture from an AIDS clinic he visited in Africa. We were able to meet once here in San Francisco, which has led me to appreciate him all the more.

Ehpien is marvelously talented and a friend who I have actually met on his home turf -- which is Washington, DC, and those monuments at dusk. This is my favorite of favorite of these, the grandness of the monument dwarfed even by the grandness of the natural monument of the sky and the river. And here www.flickr.com/photos/91499534@N00/323544148/ is the first shot I saw of his, Oia, itself a national monument of sorts.

What a great photographer -- fearlessly diving in to the crowd and capturing extraordinary moment after moment. I would liked to have included this incredible portrait as well: www.flickr.com/photos/glorialsupervia/3531081577/
Here's a collection of her work: darckr.com/username.php?id=28697146@N02

Arno the intrepid wildlife photographer and Louise with her artistic eye -- the two are prolific and their work a treasury of wildlife -- in the wild. I have often stopped at one of their cheetahs or hyenas and wondered, "how did they get out of there alive?"
Update -- My wife and I have an opportunity to travel to Kruger game park, and I am so pleased that Arno, with great generosity, has patiently answered my many questions -- with much good advice, photographic and otherwise. His best suggestion, "compose to include the feet, even if they are not there." (a rule he breaks in this photo, but, hey, it works).
Thanks Arno and Louise!

Every now and then -- very rarely -- someone captures the essence and Silvia Foglia has done that here. She reminds me that there can be no more honest work than fishing, of the dignity and hope of youth -- and she reminds me of the power of color, and of composition -- in this case that board that pulls us into this dignified world with its limitless horizon. It is a photograph that ages well revealing more with time.

The humor, the gargantuan size differential -- the lilliputian size of the people in this photo -- the detail (a red handbag and pumps, really?) and the gorgeous color make this such a fascinating photo. Michael's photostream is full of shots from above, from ground level, from the here and there of unusual perspective. Wonderful portraits and the occasional whim of little tiny subjects that catch your eye.
Two photographers on this page, Anjan58 and ehpien, and I had a chance to meet after contacting each other. Michael Brooking, on the other had, I met by chance, not even realizing we'd been each other's contacts for months before our encounter. And, I am happy to say, even oblivious of that, we had a wonderful half hour or so chatting about photography.

What can I say. There is a Flickr genre of squirrel and chipmumk photos that all look the same, but not Raymond Leinster's fine work. A red squirrel in a brush stroke of its setting and its delicacy and vulnerability brought out by the exceptional, sparing use of focus and light. You can imagine how long he sat there waiting for this squirrel. Opens up a new world of photography for me.

Rui Palha is a master of light, detail setting -- her the light, the smoke in the setting of a cooperage, mechanical, industrial man and machine and all that..the timeless old arts. He has strong subjects, powerful lines, controlled, but blinding light. His portfolio is full of it. Rui photos span the world, but his work in Lisbon are some of the most powerful. His website lists multitudes of shows, a number of works on photography that he has authored, awards galore, but it all comes down to beautiful, powerful work.
