'Surf This' - Cape Disappointment
This morning on the Washington coast was one of the best shoots of my life.
About 200 photographers were gathered to witness some mega waves and brave the elements to capture golden moments like this.
I happened to be there with F4 for the filming of our road trip. It was the third day of the trip and my third night in a tent as I flatly refused to sleep on the floor betwixt Thomas Heaton and Uncle Grumpy.
The snoring alone was enough to drive me to the tent. I will not speak of the other noises and emanations festering in that septic trailer.
Truth be told, I really enjoyed sleeping in the tent during January on the coast. I bundled up in my jackets and two sleeping bags, snug as a bug.
I didn’t tell the other guys about my relative luxury. In fact I complained about my hardship at every possible opportunity.
They were not moved.
The night before this shoot was a little unnerving however. Sleeping in a tent during a storm next to a densely forested area wasn’t my smartest moment, but if I was smart, I wouldn’t be a landscape photographer would I?
This day sparked an obsession with ocean wave photography and telephoto landscape photography in general.
Seeing this moment in the camera’s viewfinder gave me chills and I knew that I’d captured a book worthy moment.
