Assateague Island

by garybaird

This was a surprise trip. The forecast was for a rainy day, but the sun was shining bright in the morning. With no rain in sight, I packed up the car and headed to Assateague Island for a one day trip. It had been 35 years since I was there last. Back then all there was was a bridge going over the bay to a parking lot with a payphone. Now there is a state park, and a national park.

There was a cold wind blowing off the ocean, as it was early May and the water was still cold. The few people playing in the water were excited children and their parents, and some kayakers with wet suits.

After walking the beach for a bit, I hiked one of the dunes trails. My 15 year old dog was with me so we took a short hike. She is just not able to go very far anymore.

After our short hike we headed over to the bay to canoe estuaries. To me this is where all the action is. I have found that the beaches are fun but the estuaries is where the action is.
