Safety/Figure 8 Knot
At one point in my life I was a pretty decent technical rock climber and certified instructor. I still have all my gear and this was my CE0639 10.5mm Bluewater climbing rope. The knot is probably the most common for climbing and is known as a Figure 8 knot. It's also referred to as a safety knot when used for belaying (the person who assists the climber via a safety rope). The rope is also a safety device as it stops the fall if a climber makes a bad move. It's specifically designed with a certain amount of give or stretch to create a slow deceleration and not a hard stop.
Nikon 55mm f/2.8 NIKKOR Micro 6 image photo stack. Filtered late afternoon sunlight. Cropped to 3 in max height and I thought that was going to be the end of this concept but when I cropped it I found I liked it even better.
