Basilica di San Francesco, Siena, 20190102
On my way back to the parking lot at 9:00, there was this 'church' as I call these buildings, and thought: 'lets check if this thing is open'. It was. There was nobody there, it is huge, it was a bit freaky. Shot a couple of nice frames. I like how the window highlights are retained. Maybe should have closed to f/8 or f/11 to get the text in the book also sharp but that would jump the ISO's and noise.
What was I doing in Siena? Well... Harry Metcalfe of YouTube channel Harry's Garage has an episode where he was doing a rally through Italy with his Espada and at one point they were allowed to drive up to this ancient city's central square called Piazza del Campo (tourists must park outside city walls). All beautiful cars lined up on the square. It looked huge. I wanted to see it, it looked magical.
Arriving there, the square was not big at all. Tourist stores and big brands in the streets. Everywhere! It wasn't picturesque, it wasn't authentic and it sure wasn't magical. From street level you go up the mountain with escalators into the ancient city?! What kind of BS disneyland crap is this? With screeching tires on the parking I was out of there.
