Kasteel De Haar I, Haarzuilens, 20181208
Entrance to Kasteel de Haar. The biggest castle of the country. Originally from the 14th century. At the end of the 19th century it was a ruin owned by baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nijevelt. He married Hélène de Rothschild. The rich Rothschild family financed the rebuild which completed in 1912.
At the end of the previous century, the castle was in bad shape again. Due to subsided ground underneath the castle, the maintenance had become too expensive. In 2000, the Van Zuylen family handed it over to Foundation De Haar. With the help of lots of sponsors, it was renovated. Today is looks fantastic and is operated by volunteers.
My visit was excellent! I booked a guided tour called: The Secret Rooms. Staff is nice and has great stories about the building. Interiors are very detailed and look great.
