Explosion of Color

Cliffside Lake Recreation Area and Van Hook Glade Campground is a small lake/pond campground complex along US 64 (Mountain Waters Scenic Byway) run by the US Forest Service. It is very close to Dry Falls.

On our photo scouting trip at the end of August this area looked drab and unassuming, not really worthy of a serious fall season look. However, some time ago, I saw a single photograph of it during the fall season and thought it might have potential. The one mile drive up from US 64 was unbelievable. The colors had come to life just as I had hoped. As we reached the small lake we realized this was the most colorful place to shoot in the Highlands area.

The Lake is right next to the parking lot. There is a relativity flat walk around the lake if you want a few more photo ops or perspectives. There is a $ 2.00 entry fee on the honor system, but we never saw another person there. It's not very busy in the fall.
