Milky Way Mt. Pisgah

Want to try some Milky Way photography ? Prepare to stay up late ( this was taken around 10:30pm ), wear proper clothing for the cool nights, and carry a red filtered flashlight so you can see the controls of your camera without disturbing anyone else doing the same thing.

Our first attempt at this type of photography. Taken on Mt. Pisgah, Blue Ridge Parkway. I must give gudos to the nice gentleman from the Asheville Astronomy Club we met in the parking lot. We did not get his name, but he took the time to show us where & how to make these shots. Shot with the Canon 5DM3 with Sigma 15-30 .

Hint: Do you research before you go. Find the darkest place possible. The Milky Way display is not always visible to your naked eye, so you need to know where to look. Use the lowest f-stop available on your lens, use the widest lens in your bag, shoot for no more than 20 seconds or the earth will move under you, and shoot the highest ISO possible without creating a lot of noise. The EXIF information here you give you a general guide on how to start. Shot with a Sigma 15-30 lens. Always try to add something in the foreground to add interest.
