Bust Your Butt Falls
This popular swimming hole and natural slide on the Cullasaja River along US Highway 64 near Highlands is also known as Quarry Falls. It's a short walk over some rocks from a couple of pull-offs for parking. For added excitement, there is a "jump off" rock for diving into the chilly waters. With all the slippery boulders, be extra careful! And check out the depth of water before diving since levels can vary depending on rainfall. The many large rocks also make a great spot for watching, picnicking and sunning.
It's along a very scenic stretch of US Highway 64 Waterfalls Byway through the Cullasaja River Gorge in the Nantahala National Forest. This section of road is also dubbed as the Mountain Waters Scenic Byway. In places, you are literally driving along the edge of the cliff. So drive slowly! Other waterfalls nearby include the Bridal Veil Falls, Dry Falls and Cullasaja Falls.
Directions: Bust Your Fall Falls on US Highway 64 about 6.5 miles west of Highlands (and about 3 miles from Dry Falls). It's about 10 miles from Franklin (very visible on the right). There's no street address for GPS.
Hints: In the spring and summer this falls and river around it are crawling with swimming tourist. If you want to take photos or some funny videos of people actually busting their butts show up during these seasons. In the winter season it's pretty dull. The best time is fall, when the fall colors just seem to frame this small waterfall/cascade. You can shoot from the roadside, but if you up to it go down riverside on the rocks. Be Careful.
