Into The Abyss

Grandfather Mountain NC Mile High Swinging Bridge

I have lived in NC for quite a long time, and had never been to Grandfather Mountain until today. Another photography lesson learned! Always check the weather forecast. Driving wind, rain and fog, with sustained winds of 28mph and gust up around 60, but I was bound and determined to cross the mile high swinging bridge. This shot was taken just before I started my trek across the 228 foot long bridge that is 80 feet off the ground and 1 mile in elevation. Scary in that kind of wind, but I made it across and back. HINT: if you ever find the bridge in these conditions, turn right when you leave the park and drive 3-4 miles to the Grandfather Mountain Country Club parking lot. You can get amazing pictures of the bridge from there, especially when fog shrouded. Unfortunately, it was of those shots that you saw too late and you did not turn the car around. Will kick myself for some time to come about the missed shot.
