After Christmas I re-visited the project to finish it off properly. I used Liquid Electrical Tape (because there are bare conductors at the end) to black-out the worst of the light leakage . It was only when I took this photo that I realised I had two slightly different models of the LCD (one in the box and one breadboarded for further coding).
