The Squid Wig

Because I’m allergic to squid, and I didn’t want to ruin any of her clothing,I made her outfit special for the photos and then washed it afterwards. Don’t worry, the doll also got a full bath after this. While I remembered to wear gloves for most of the production of the wig, I forgot for about five minutes and had a mild allergic reaction that lasted a day.

Each of the legs was trimmed with a fillet knife so that the base of the leg was thinner and would lay flatly against the head. Then they were carefully sewn to the still wet wig cap that I hastily made just for this while the glue was still wet. Then the hair was carefully arranged into a loose style around the head for photos.

My husband ate the mantle of the squid, which was the majority of the animal. He spent the time I was putting the wig together prepping and cooking his calamari. I’m told it was delicious. It’s fun when my experiments end up being his food experiments.

For weeks all I’ve been able to think about is, “I’ve got a jar of dirt!” There’s just something about her that reminds me of Tia Dalma (Calypso) from Pirates of the Caribbean. Truthfully, we haven’t named her and have just called her by her sculpt name, Siobhan. Maybe she is a tiny little sea witch after all?
