Shed-bashing, 1960s style. Birkenhead (8H), 6th November 1966.

It was a busy weekend. Starting from Birmingham, four of us travelled in a rather old Austin Mini, and in two days we visited 21 loco sheds, as follows:

5.11.66: Stoke-on-Trent 5D, Northwich 8E, Wigan (Springs Branch) 8F, Preston (Lostock Hall) 10D, Bolton 9K, Manchester (Patricroft) 10C, Manchester (Trafford Park) 9E, Newton Heath 9D, Stockport 9B, Heaton Mersey 9F, Buxton 9L.

6.11.66: Stockport 9B, Warrington 8B, St Helens (Sutton Oak) 8G, Speke Junction 8C, Liverpool (Edge Hill) 8A, Aintree 8L, Birkenhead 8H, Chester 6A, Wrexham (Croes Newedd) 6C, Shrewsbury 6D, Wolverhampton (Oxley) 2B.

I took 171 photographs, using a Russian Fed-2 35mm rangefinder camera and FP3 film bought in bulk and loaded under the bed-clothes into second-hand cassettes (obtained free from a girl called Janet who worked in the photo processing department of a chemist's shop where they would otherwise have been thrown away). The finished films were developed in the kitchen, and a few favourites were hand-printed in the students' union camera club darkroom. About a third of the negatives have now been scanned.

As you can see, the students of the 1960s didn't spend all of their time on sex and drugs as is commonly believed.
