Laura Petrovich-Cheney, "Cornered"

2017

Salvaged wood from Hurricane Sandy and the 2016 Gatlinburg, Tennessee fire

Gift of Anonymous Donor

2018.3

Inspired by traditional quilt construction, Laura Petrovich-Cheney creates vibrant wall sculptures from natural disaster debris, such as Hurricane Sandy and the 2016 wildfires in Gatlinburg,

Tennessee. Bringing together forgotten fragments of domestic environments—wooden siding, porch railings, dressers, and chairs—Petrovich-Cheney probes notions of home, materiality, and memory, and the transformation of debris into fully realized art forms.

A former fashion designer and textile artist,

Petrovich-Cheney incorporates both traditional and contemporary quilt patterns in her forms, and much like fiber quilt-makers, she creates objects with portent and visual appeal using discarded scraps that once had different purposes. Cornered is part of a subset of works that bridge two media, in this case fiber and wood.
