Andean Motmot or Higland Motmot (Momotus aequatorialis)

February 22, 2025, at El Enseuño, Quindío, Colombia.

Here is an Andean Motmot or Higland Motmot (Momotus aequatorialis). It rained for a good part of the day, so we were content to shoot while under cover from our observation deck that overlooks the rear of the property. El Ensueño hosts a family of Andean Motmots, so they are always present. I don't usually photograph them, having done so many times in the past. Today, with soft light from rain and overcast skies, this one posed nicely for an opportune shot.

This motmot is a large bird, perhaps 46 cm (18 inches) in total length. The Andean Motmot was recently reclassified and is now a separate species from the similar Blue-crowned Motmot (Momotus momota). The Andean Motmot is a common bird found in the Andean highlands of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 3,100 meters.
