ForSale_1985

This shot was taken looking towards the Square from a vantage point on West Hickory--looking east-southeast. I used a 500mm lens to compress the visual information. From left to right: The First State Bank (now Wells Fargo), the south side of the Square, the MuClurkan Building, and the Denton County National Bank Building. A couple of the buildings on the south side of the Square have acquired second stories, since this picture was taken. This is part of a really good burger joint, and when bands play there in warm weather, their music takes over the Square. Note the texture of the wall on the bank. These were prefabricated plates or panels raised into place with a crane. The McClurkan building dates from the early 1920's, and it was the first steel framed building on the Square. It was long the site of Russell's Department Store, but it is now an office building The McClurkan and Russell families--both dry goods merchants--were linked by marriage. My family and the Williams Store had a friendly rivalry with Russell's. We're Dry Good folks, too.
