Flight of the Snow Petral

December 23, 2008: A snow petrel soars between colossal icebergs just off the coast of Devil Island. This photo was taken from a zodiac cruising through the ice. The sound of two icebergs crashing into each other is one of the most amazing sounds I have ever heard and most likely ever will hear. The photo was taken on a study abroad program where students from around the US studied, and explored the untouched land of Antarctica. Antarctica is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent on the planet and is also known as the largest dessert on earth. Antarctica has felt the effects of global climate change with the collapse of ice shelves and melting of the peninsula. Humankind is faced with these effects and the time to act is now, before it's too late. Antarctica will always remain an untamed land of absolute splendor and power. Let's keep it that way.
