Autumn in the lake (On Explore 10/31/2015)

Autumn, or Fall in North America, runs astronomically this year 2015 from Wednesday September 23 to Monday December 21 and marks the transition from Summer to Winter. In preparation for Winter, the trees start shedding their leaves and in the process the leaves get different colorful tonalities among red, orange, yellow and even purple. The lake is not technically a lake it is a “retention pond” not to confuse with a “detention pond”. A detention pond is a low lying area that is designed to temporarily hold a set amount of water while slowly draining to another location. On the other hand, a retention pond is designed to hold a specific amount of water indefinitely. They are more or less around for flood control when large amounts of rain could cause flash flooding. Both ponds are tools for erosion control and are abundant in the area to protect the Chesapeake Bay from accumulation of unwanted dirt which is harmful to oysters, an important fishing industry.
