Christmas Snow

Christmas morning brought clear blue skies and crisp weather to our area of Northern California. A perfect morning for bird watching before heading to dinner with the family. A short distance south of Llano Seco Wildlife Refuge we could see thousands of birds in the air. By the time we reached their location, they had all settled back down but it didn't take but a moment to determine what had them in the air minutes before. A Bald Eagle stood on one of the levees between rice checks. The hunt had been unsuccessful. The geese were settled for a short time, but soon started a nervous chatter from group to group. As the chatter grew, I knew any moment they would take to the air again. As if on cue, the first wave took off--thouands of wings sounding like the roar of a freight train--then wave after wave repeated the ascent. We were absorbed in the sight along with the thunderous sounds of calling Snow Geese. A wonderful Christmas gift of snow on this special morning.
