Pipevine Swallowtail

View On Black

One of the first butterflies to become a common sight in the spring, the Pipevine Swallowtail's black wings are easy to identify. California Dutchman's pipe (Pipevine) is this butterfly's host plant. Substances that are consumed from the host plant make it distasteful to predators. For that reason, their coloration and flight are mimicked by other butterflies.
