12th Street Bridge Sunset HDR

Highest Position in Explore #177 May 13, 2011 Thank You!

I went out last night trying to figure out where would be the best spot for sunset. 12th Street Bridge? Kerry Park? Waterfront? West Seattle? As I kept driving, I was watching the clouds and made my mind up when I passed under the 12th street bridge!

So I arrived a bit before sunset and saw some promising clouds forming, but as time progressed, the color faded. As I have always shot a wider shot and normally with some cloud show going on, I decided to stick it out for a clear sky shot. I originally was the only one up on the bridge and then a few other photographers showed up.

I finally met one of my contacts Hai www.flickr.com/photos/haitek/ on the bridge. He has a nice shot of this scene covered in snow!

I normally shoot this scene wide to include Quest Field, where the Seahawks play, and Safeco Field, where the Mariners play, but decided to include part of the rail from the bridge. This was part necessity as I was not in the middle of the bridge where I normally stand, which vibrates more when a bus or truck pass. This is closer to where the bridge and hill meet, so less vibration.

This is a combination of three exposures (timed exposures) merged in Photomatix. I was able to clean up some color aberrations and cropped in Photoshop. I played with the White Balance just a bit in Lightroom to tone down the orange/yellow of the lights.

After all of the awesome posts I have been seeing from the Columbia River Gorge, I just might need to trek on down there to shoot the wild flowers! Of course I want to go to the Palouse and to the ocean! First up, though needs to be the Gorge for the flowers. If you happen to see someone walking around in a big plastic bubble, that will be me protecting myself from the ticks, mosquitoes, poison oak, and any other thing Mother Nature tries to throw my way!
