Liverpool tram No. 762
An old photograph of Liverpool Corporation Passenger Transport (LCPT) tram No. 762 showing '25 - Aigburth Vale - Netherfield Rd - Moss St - Princes Park' destination blinds. Liverpool Corporation Tramways (LCT) changed its name to LCPT in May 1934.
Thanks to fred collins for the location.
"762 seen at the Carisbrooke Road Walton terminus. The rather fine terrace of houses which overlooked the Walton tram depot have now gone (as has the depot.) and is now a B & M store car park!"
The photo reverse is stamped with the photographer (and/or negative owner) name of H. B. Priestly, and the date 25 Apr 1938.
No. 762 was an 'English Electric bogie car' built by LCT at its Edge Lane Works going into service *Dec 1931, it seated 28/42 and ran on English Electric monomoter equal wheel bogies. In 1932-33 it had its destination boxes moved from over the upper saloon window to above the drivers screen, in 1937 was given a green livery, and in Mar 1938 (another source says 1939) was reconditioned, getting replacement EMB lightweight bogies. It was withdrawn from service in Apr 1955.
No. 762 has survived and runs on the Birkenhead heritage line. Its history after being withdrawn, and photographs of it running, are on the 'Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society' site:-
The parts of the Liverpool tramways system that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to bus operation closed in Sep 1957.
* There is a photo of 762 outside Edge Lane Works a few months before it went into service, and one of it in Dale Street, in 'Liverpool Transport' by J. B. Horne & T. B. Maund (Vol 3, p85 and Vol 4, p117).
If there are any errors in the above description please let me know. Thanks.
